Disability (Non-Occupational) Claims Specialist

In this role, you would manage a block of short-term disability or absence management cases. You would be responsible for every part of the disability claim process, from the initial decision, to building the right case management plan, identifying the supports needed, designing appropriate return to work plans, and coordinating with the absent employee, employer and providers involved in the case.

Employment Responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with our clients, working in partnership with them to address their workplace absence issues
  • Assess claims for benefit entitlement by reviewing contractual, medical, functional and occupational information
  • Develop and maintain outcome-focused case management plans, to return absent employees to work
  • Work collaboratively with absent employees, employers, health care practitioners and other stakeholders to obtain information, provide claim status, create action plans and provide verbal and written decisions while maintaining confidentiality and privacy
  • Prioritize work items in order to meet client service standards
  • Contribute to a dynamic work environment by identifying opportunities to improve processes and customer service delivery
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management
  • Stay current with disability and wellness practices
  • Participate in required meetings, providing input and suggestions
  • Manage the transition from STD to LTD when applicable


  • 3-5 years experience in disability case management managing Short or Long Term Disability claims
  • Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (eg. Psychology, Sociology, etc) or professional degree (eg social work, occupational therapy, kinesiology, nursing) or equivalent experience
  • CDMP (Certified Disability Management Professional) designation is considered an asset
  • Outstanding communication skills – verbal and written
  • Excellent customer service and telephone skills, with the ability to communicate complex and difficult information clearly with tact and sensitivity
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • An understanding of contract wording and the ability to thoroughly review medical reports and other tools available (eg. Independent Medical Exams, Functional Capacity Exams, Medical Consultant Reviews)
  • A general understanding of the health care and insurance fields, health related terminology, concepts of accommodation and return to work
  • Ability to professionally manage stressful situations
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Bilingual (English/French) written and spoken is preferred
